Resident Evil: Abyss

Prologue

November, 1998... only a month has passed since Raccoon City was wiped off the map. The world watched in horror and confusion as the event unfolded. What kind of horrible disease could turn humans into the living dead, warping animals and even plants into monstrous abominations? Only the surviving members of STARS knew the truth... Umbrella Incorporated, the world-known pharmaceutical company was merely a front for their studies in biological weaponry and warfare. The STARS team were no longer alone in their fight for justice however...

Another survivor managed to escape Raccoon City, bearing the burden of the truth on his shoulders as well. Leon S. Kennedy, having sought out the STARS survivors for answers and help, is now their newest ally in the fight against the inhumane organization. With a little outside assistance and their own intell, the small band of vigilantes discover that a cruise line- Sponsored by Umbrella- is most likely housing a secret and dangerous viral cargo in the hull. Rather than allow Umbrella to continue their horrible experiments, they decide to infiltrate the cruise ship and destroy all traces of the virus.

The mission will be no smooth sailing by any means...

Main Characters

Barry Burton:
Barry was a humbled and shamed man after the initial Mansion Incident, due to his betrayal against the STARS. Despite the forgiveness he received, he felt he needed to work round the clock to ensure the safety of his team- Especially Jill. He seems like a gruff and serious man most of the time, but he has a large and caring heart. He is a family man who is sensitive to the protection of those younger than him.

After rescuing Jill from the doomed Raccoon City, Barry and the rest of the remaining STARS team laid low for a while. Now aware that Umbrella was targeting them specifically, they knew they couldn't be too careful. Surprisingly, someone who claimed to be from the RPD managed to contact them, and after a few screening processes revealed him to be Leon S. Kennedy. After Barry personally checked out his profile, he welcomed the young man to join their cause, ultimately taking the rookie under his wing. When word of the cruise ships cargo got around, Leon eagerly volunteered and Barry knew the young man shouldn't go alone.

Specialties:
Barry is a large man with immense strength. He can take large amounts of damage, but is more slow-moving than Leon is. As a weapons expert, he also has a higher chance of getting a headshot with his handgun. Barry's special items are his steel-tips: Extremely fortified footgear that allows him to kick in doors that have flimsy locks.

Leon S. Kennedy:
Leon still burns with the desire to serve and protect others. While he was more of a pushover during his first and only day as an officer, he has since become more assertive, especially since he feels his nativity was what lost Sherry. He isn't shy to demand answers if he feels he is being left in the dark. While he's still a "good cop" at heart, he's understandably jaded from his experiences in Raccoon City.

Ever since that fateful day, Leon spent his time tracking down the only ones who seemed to share the truth behind Umbrella: The STARS team. He had a feeling they would hold a few answers to his situation, but first wanted to prove his worth to them, as well as earn their trust. So, when the idea of an Umbrella infiltration mission came up, Leon was the first to volunteer himself on the dangerous task. Maybe if he proves himself, his new allies will help him find Sherry so he can undo his mistake...

Specialties:
Leon is young and slim, able to run quickly without losing stamina. He is however, more susceptible to damage he receives. After Raccoon City, he began to train himself in personal defense- As a result he is very talented with his knife, able to get multiple hits in one swing. Leon's special item is the grappling hook he used to infiltrate the hull: He is able to raise or lower himself through any hole, making it easy to access other floors.

Other Characters

Lucia McGivern:
A 14 year old girl on vacation with her parents aboard the Queen Zenobia. She's a bit of a tomboyish troublemaker, but knows when to be serious as well. While smart and resourceful, she's a tad small for her age and can only go so far as to defend herself. The emotional impact of the situations befalling the cruise ship weighs heavily on her, but still she fights through, doing anything to protect herself and her family.

Bruce McGivern:
A security guard and father to Lucia, finally cashing in his vacation time with his family. At his side also is his wife, Fong-Ling McGivern. He's generally a laid-back kind of guy- His hometown doesn't see much crime, and as such his job is usually uneventful. He can still handle himself with a firearm of course, and can jump into action even if it takes him by surprise. He doesn't handle emotional situations very tactfully though, quicker to push people away rather than involve them- Even towards his own family.

Morpheus D. Duvall
A man shrouded in mystery, who allegedly is in charge of the cargo workers beneath the ship. If all of the STARS intell adds up, he is most likely a higher rank in the Umbrella B.O.W. research line, and is to be taken with extreme precaution.

Woman in the Sunhat:
A mysterious female passenger has been seen in the hull multiple times. Who is she, and what is she doing in the restricted areas of the cruise ship?

Other Features

Save Rooms
During the game you can find small rooms that play a soothing melody. In them you will find a typewriter to save your game on, and sometimes a chest to place or exchange items. There are never enemies in these rooms, so take the time to heal a character, plan your next step and of course, save your progress.

First Aid Stations
Throughout the Queen Zenobia are a pharmaceutical rooms in case of a passenger or crew member injuring themselves. First Aid Stations usually have a few pickable healing items, but most notable is the First Aid Box. The First Aid Boxes hold enough supplies for a character to either fully heal a sever injury once, or heal 3 smaller injuries. There are only enough supplies to choose one of these options however- And once all options are used, the Box is emptied and no longer accessible. Plan very carefully how you choose to heal your character, as you may wish you'd chosen differently later on.

Damaging Props
Some objects you will come across are destructible. Things like oxygen tanks, fire extinguishers and steam pipes will all result in a different type of explosion when shot. This explosion can take out multiple enemies at a time- But be careful! Stand too close, and your character may get caught in the explosion as well.

Live Selection
There are certain cinematic events where the character is prompted to pick one of two choices. This choice will alter how the character handles a situation, which can result in avoiding an enemy, gaining an item, traversing a new path, or changes the overall atmosphere of the story. Choose wisely!

Objective Menu
As you progress, you character will write down notes about key items they recently found, areas they need to go and other such things. If you pick up in the middle of a game and feel a bit lost, be sure to check the Objective Menu and get right back in the game.
Instruction Booklet excerpt for my fictional game Resident Evil: Abyss

Just a very basic look into the concept for Barry and Leon's mission aboard the Queen Zenobia. The plot borrows elements from Resident Evil Gaiden, Dead Aim and Revelations. I've decided to include plot points even from the newer games that I don't like as much, simply because I think some ideas could have been done well if written differently. The biggest problem I feel the series started to have was rushing the timeline- Jumping from the late 90's to 2004 was a bit too big of a gap for my taste, leaving a lot to be desired.

This fan-game would take place between Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and Code Veronica. It also takes place a short while before Survivor.

I'll probably write up a full in-depth look into the whole story that takes place over the course of the game, as well as the ending. It'll flow right into the rest of the fan timeline, I'll just get working on that when I get the chance and motivation.

I won't be personally making this an actual playable game, I just wanted to give an idea what it would be like and give it a more authentic feeling. As much as I like the story of the old games, I understand that a video game needs to be, well, playable in order to have a solid spot in the series. Though I admit, it'd be awesome to be a PS1 modder or even enough skill on an RPG Maker to make this a reality.

Alright, so Leon would be the one used for speed runs.
Cool.

I love Berry's "special ability."

As Berry himself once said, "Who's the master of unlocking now!?"
