Teh Stream RPG [DEMO] by DoubleLeggy Teh Stream RPG [DEMO] by DoubleLeggy
:bulletgreen:Teh Stream RPG Demo

:bulletgreen:Plans & Updates

Edit: The full game will be released very soon!

Once upon a time I made an attempt with RPG Maker.
The result was the unfinished game Stories of Streamside.

This time around I wanted to try something completely different, mainly with utilizing the ability to replace default tilesets. Once I learned to use the tools required, I formed an idea to base this Stream related game on Teh Stream Comic this time around. Also, rather than making it a typical straightforward RPG, I tried my hand at creating an open-ended adventure with decision making.

This game is by no means complete- In fact, that's practically the point of it! What I'd like is for you guys to give it a go, explore what can be explored and let me know what you think. What other "sections" would you like to see? What kinds of characters and events? Any fond Stream moments you'd like to see acted out by the little sprite actors? The world of Teh Stream can be expanded with your help! Any bug reports or criticism is welcome too, any improvements help.

How to Install:
:bulletblack:Click the link at the top of the description
:bulletblack:You'll be directed to a Google Drive webpage
:bulletblack:Click "Download" - The time it takes may vary
:bulletblack:Google should be safe, but run a scan to be sure
:bulletblack:Once saved, the .zip needs to be extracted
:bulletblack:Once extracted, open "Teh Stream" folder
:bulletblack:Find the application called "Game" (horse icon)
:bulletblack:Just double click that and you should be in!

Note:
Do not tamper with any folders or files inside the main folder!
Doing this will most likely cause the game to crash, or simply not work.

If you are a fellow RPG VX creator and want to look at the raw game data to see how I made an event or what scripts I used, you're more than welcome to do that. If you wish to use any of the content I created myself, please ask my permission and provide credit, linking to my channel: DoubleLeggy

Critique:
Is mainly intended for the actual game, as all the artwork used here is recycled.
If you have anything to say about the cover layout itself though, I'd be happy to hear.

Just finished a play-through of it after not being able to find anything left to do in it. I quite enjoyed just how unique and fun this was compared to some other RPG's. It has a quirky sense of humour and good characters. I like how it exaggerates on the crappiest parts of the internet for humour's sake. It was kinda immersive that's no lie, I found myself shouting "LADY WHERE YOU AT?" a few times in each new area :P

I think to improve: in the final product try to add somewhat of a plotline if you want or expand on the current worlds.

Taking into consideration how this game is Incomplete I'd currently give it a 7.5 or 8 out of 10.

I look forward to the final release and to see if you can turn this into a popular RPG, which it has the potential to become :)

----------------------------
I. Initial reaction
II. Cover art
III. The game
----------------------------
I. At first I saw the gleeful looking character that I'm assuming is the protagonist--I nodded my head in approval with a smirk. Then I look to the left and find the same character wielding a large hammer--I automatically am like: "Oh, hold on a minute, this isn't necessarily a simple going happy everyday girl--she may want to break a few bones." -that's when I saw the rated T-M. But what ultimately caught my attention was that it was cover art for an RPG Maker related project. Because me and my friend loves working with this program. But that's how I came across this at least...

II. The cover art is magnificent in my eyes, and happy looking girls are my favorite pieces of art to find on this site--typically anime girls. To be honest, after playing the game as Leggy, I kind of found myself in love with the character's appearance and personality; but I'll get to that once I get on to the game itself. The cover was just so good looking to be honest, a bunch of interesting looking characters to the right--after playing the game I can assume that they are part of something bigger, I'm assuming whatever these videos I kept hearing about are. If this were a real game, I'd probably use this cover for it--because it was good enough to convince me to try this game out.

III. I had no idea what to expect from this--I initially assumed that it would just be an amateurish RPG made by someone with great art skills--GEEZ, don't I feel stupid now... After playing this, I realize just how much more work our games need! Great music, great art work, plenty of humor, and a lot of scenarios that I myself have encountered--like fandom idiots and perverts.

In this game, you take on the role of the character Leggy, as I said, I later found this character very pretty and fun to look at--mostly the reactions she had to things, my favorite one being the circular white eyes she gets when something strange, shocking, or offensive happens. Admittedly, it took me like 5-8 minutes to realize that Leggy is the author of this game... What I liked about this, is that it seems to be tackling past predicaments and stupid situations the author found herself in on the internet. I'm not familiar with this person or any of the famous videos she has done, but I'm not one of the guys who'll start bowing down because of a little popularity. It seems her crazed fans are a recurring enemy in the game, usually getting into fights with Leggy by offending her. And Leggy can clearly break some bones... Mein Gott, she can clearly be a loose cannon on people she dislikes...

I loved how Deviantart was depicted in this game--the music was fitting and the conversations in Deviantart is hilarious. My favorite part to the Deviantart world--had to be the +18 section. I pretty much agreed with every single thing Leggy would say in that section... Did I mention Leggy can ban people like some demigod? Stay on her good side.

What I found sad, is that every character didn't have one of these nice drawings--I don't think any of the characters were as much of eye candy as Leggy, (and not because of the obvious...) but I sure wish every character could've had their own unique look. The key word there was wish, I imagine drawing a portrait for every single little character would get tiresome and possibly hard to keep original--so that's not a complaint or anything, rather it's just a shame. I certainly don't make a unique portrait for every single minor! I'd gladly shake the hands with anyone who can actually do this.

As I said, I'm not familiar with the author or any of her works--but I can get a general idea of the struggles she faces on the internet. I actually prefer playing as a girl more than a guy in stuff like this--in fact; every single story I write has a female protagonist, BUT I GUESS THAT MAKES ME GAY HURR.... I really hate the whole stereotype that girls are weak and only good for pleasing us, so I always respect these things that depict the girls as asskickers--specifically Leggy.

The game did keep me busy for a bit, considering it was 400MB--I could expect from the start that this wasn't an amateurish project--oh no, I was way off base.

In conclusion, I wasn't sure if the author was requesting a critique on JUST this picture, but I decided to go the extra mile and just play the damn game. I mean, why not?

I like everything about this project, the cover, the game, the characters, and the jokes. I think this was worth however long it took to build this game, and was a good download on my part. I'll be sure to show my RPG friend this game, because clearly we need better insight on how to make an RPG...

I'm interested in using RPG maker to make some games, and I was wondering if you could tell me about its integrity. I Googled "RPG Maker" and came to a very official looking page called "rpgmakerweb.com." The programs offered were "RPG Maker VX Ace" which was a paid program for $69.99, and RPG Maker VX Ace Lite, which was a free program. If you could please please tell me which version you're using, and/or any problems with your computer you may have experienced because of it (Malware, viruses, pop-ups, or anything of such a nature), I would be very grateful.

I'd probably recommend RPG Maker VX Ace. I haven't used it much yet (this current game is being made on original VX) but Ace pretty much seems to improve everything by a ton. A lot more readily available options and customization. The only reason I got my current game to look the way it is was through a TON of scripting and modding that is honestly quite a lot of trouble to go through.

But you can get VX Ace through Steam; I got my version on sale for 15.99 or something along those lines. So you'd probably be better off doing the same and waiting for a sale to come around. Just add it to your wishlist and you'll get e-mail notifications when it goes on sale.

Just started playing yesterday seeing as I'm going to be making a cameo in it, I figure I should give it a try, and it's actually pretty fun. Bit difficult seeing as I'm not a huge RPG fan (Too much Resident Evil) but I'm getting the hang of it, love the quirky sense of humor it has going with it along with the music selection and game play.

That's great, I'm glad you like it! I tried to make it a bit on the simpler side (not necessarily easy though) so that non-RPG players can hopefully at least manage to understand it. Like there won't be any leveling or grinding typical in RPGs so hopefully when it's done, it'll be a simple but nice experience. And I'm glad you enjoy the humor too XP

Basically, most of the areas you go to are still parts of Teh Stream. If you've ever been on a very busy chat, sometimes lots of people are talking about different topics all at once. The way I wanted to present it was like each area is a "topic" - Streamside, Resident Evil, artwork, video games, etc. They're all taking place in Teh Stream, but sectioned off for the sake of it being a big, explorable game. There will be a particular area though that isn't part of Teh Stream which will be explained a bit within the game. Hope that makes sense!

Yeah, actually it's a bit messy but some I only use 1 or 2 sprites from a single sheet. But editing and condensing them would break the in-game images so I'm probably gonna end up with a lot of leftovers. I'm gonna delete any full pages that are unused, though.

This is really fun! From what I've been able to play on this, I keep imagining something is gonna happen as Leggy makes her rounds around teh stream and other places online. Like the earthquakes and such? At first I didn't realize it was Leggy when she got mad, I thought it was like someone hacking or 'attacking' deviantArt but then got the dialogue going again and I laughed. Leggy, your stomps are enough to kick anyone off. XD I love the sprites, how each one is uniquely made and the little icons for the main characters. Though, on that note, I would think it would be best if Leggy's icon changed with each place she goes that does a major change on her sprite, like Raccoon City for example. :D Doesn't have to be every section of the game just the major changes.

Twizt seems up to something. XD Either she and her buddies are going to be a major problem or the rival gang that's just going to be in Leggy's way at times while dealing with a major issue, whatever that maybe. Maybe someone trying to infect her chatrooms, or something, idk. And the music is awesome, I'm actually bobbing my head as I wander the 'worlds' and while in battle. I love Kick and Ban and of course the Umbrella theme. I love the battle concept its just old school and yet different too. We be using admin powers! Speaking of powers, I seriously like how each one is very unique for each character! Not like just you know Leggy's got ice powers then you got someone else adept to healing or fire, not just that but each one fits to their personality and character.

Leggy's coldest glare = bluescreen of death lol

The humor was spot on, some of them were interesting and serious, like how that one girl wanted to be just like you and choosing correctly, you inspire her to be herself. It's so cute. And them fanboy rages... Ah, "Steve fangirls! Steve fangirls EVERYWHERE!" Speaking of which, I really enjoyed interacting with the RE characters and their confusion of how you seem indifferent to the chaos going on, surprised at your 'insight' of them and well... their reactions to what you say, especially Steve. lol

Them points... good thing I know enough about fantasy games to poke at everything. XD I was finding them everywhere, good thing too, I was taking hits hard from experimenting in battle, and used a lot of the reboots. I wonder, would you be placing other places to go afk in the different 'worlds' so we don't have to keep going back to the chatroom to rest? I'm just curious about that.

My only complaints, even though its basically a demo... is that one, it was short. lol I kept thinking of what's gonna happen then I don't have anything left to do. But it is fun, just wandering about each world and get a feel for it all. Two, a lack of introduction, though I'm pretty sure its because you haven't either figured out how to go about it without it being cheesy or you figured most wouldn't need one to know the characters. Sadly, I don't know much of the other characters, I know most of them from the videos you made and through their dialogue, which did make them shine a little, though still for others, its'll be a little difficult. Thankfully, I watched your videos enough to kinda get a basic idea of who they are and how they act. lol Wonder if Arthur will appear? =P

I'm super excited when the full game comes out, slow process, I know, I'm patient, which reminds me of another sprite maker that's also designing a game...a fighting game actually... for a group of youtubers.

Anyway, from what I'm seeing, Leggy is this game's got potential and I can't imagine what you got in store for us all in the final piece.

I'm glad you enjoyed it so far, thanks very much! It's good to know you enjoy the humor of it too, I always second guess myself with those kinda things. I've actually already made pretty much all the custom sprites and portraits for the important characters. So much has been added but there's also still so much to be done!

You're on the right track with Twizt! Though while she's only had a few small conversations in the demo, she's been re-written and made even more prominent as the game reaches finalization. I'm glad you like the music too, naturally I pick some of my own favorites and hope my taste in music is enjoyed by others. Oh and with the powers, I've added and changed them up some so each character has 6 powers each (2 being Admin Powers) so hopefully that's improved too!

I'm also hoping with the humor and interactions it can be understood and appreciated by other too. I try to base it not only on my own personal encounters, but what I assume are things other people have dealt with at some point online too. Crazy fans are in every fandom, I think we've all run into one at some point!

Adding other AFK places is a good idea so I did just that. I figured certain beds can also be used to sleep in at other areas, so I'll make a point to add a message that "some empty beds can be used for AFK". For the game's final length, I think in the very least it will be over an hour long (assuming you know exactly where to go.who to talk to right away). If you talk to everyone and explore everything, at this point it might be as long as 3 hours but I can't say for certain. The unfortunate thing is I put in a lot of work for only a little turnout, but I'm gonna try my best.

I'm gonna try to make a better introduction (and conclusion) as well. As is, it honestly is just more of a filler like "okay let's start the game" not to mention a lack of plot over all. The game still starts with little plot right now, but it's more of a plot that's revealed over time now. I also hope the new dialogue gives a better feel for the characters, we'll see! But yo who Arthur?!

Thanks so much for your insight and patience! I hope the wait will be worth it!

Arthur from RE Survivor. lol Though Teh Stream wise... he doesn't exist.. I think, dunno.

That all sounds exciting and I'm more excited to see what it'll be when its ready. They sure are everywhere, the worst ones being white knights. >.> Like the PETA online and for every single fandom. 1 to 3 hours of gameplay in total sounds about right for a first game. Especially after the game's been polished and looked over well enough. :) Plus the fun of RPGs is exploring, so I'm gonna do just that, explore every nook and cranny.

No problem, it'll totally be worth it from what I've seen so far and how much passion and effort you put into the game. So it'll pay off no worries. ^^ Plus who knows after a while, it may turn into a series, plot wise and you might get help from others that are also learning how to make their own indie games. :)

Oh you mean Ark? XD Yeah he's just from my Survivor series but is original in RE Gun Survivor the game. I could toss him in the RE section actually, that'd be a fun idea. Or hell, an entire section dedicated to Survivor wouldn't be far off from how things are in real life, Survivor fans coming together to one spot. I kinda need one more area to add and that'd be a really fun one!

Omg PETA and white knights, shit's scary XD But I hope I can get it done maybe by 2015? We'll see though, I got so much other stuff to do! But thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed it so far and I do plan on making it a series! Though mainly because I'm sick to death of using RPG Maker VX and wanna use my copy of ACE so I'm gonna cut this first game a bit short. Doing tile swaps in regular VX is frustrating to the point of blood-boiling, I think it's about 100 times easier in ACE. I welcome any help or advice from those with any experience in the field!

I knew it started with an 'A' but for some reason came to me as Arthur? Dunno why.. oh wait, I have a cousin named Arthur, he hated being nick-named Art so we instead called him Ark or something. Probably why I confused the two. xD Oops.

But yeah, I know he's actually a RE spin-off character but still... an RE character. (much more interesting than Jake is really) But cool. Let's see, you have DA, RE, teh Stream, that one fantasy one (can't remember it off the top of my head) and possibly RE Survivor... so that's about five areas there. What would be a good place that you do tend to hang around at a lot? The net be huge! Almost like MegaMan Battle Network. @.@ So much to see.

Yeah, that's kinda what I call people that just 'defend' their idols or fandoms to the point it which they do opposite of which they intend to do, but so blind in the gung-ho 'I'm right, you're wrong' mindset that they believe what they do is right; despite them pissing off everyone else in doing so even pissing off their idols. So I think of them as the PETA version of fandoms, white knights. xD

I don't blame you, so many projects and so much that can be done in a day then you got life things to do, creative slumps, lazy days and even times you just get too sick to do anything. But thankfully, the game doesn't need to be rushed. :) Quality over quantity, anyone can rush through a game but very few have the patience to see it done right and go slow. Yeah, its a pain in the ass. I should know, making a Minecraft Map from scratch is a pain in the ass. XD I could half ass it but then it wouldn't be as how I wanted it to be. Which is fun. Believe me I'm months behind on it mostly due to me not knowing what to do next, or not sure how to put it in then creative slumps. (evil things) But I'm still trudging through. It'll be ready when I think it is and have it tested.. e.o the hours of hell I'm gonna have with the redstone wiring. x.x

Really? I haven't used my copy of RPG Maker yet but hearing that sounds painful. Them Tile swaps. But hopefully, if you ask around, you might find some tuts lying around or videos on how to use some tips for ACE. :)

Oh I see, it's all good XD

Yeah as of now I have 2 extra areas added, but I think 1 more will even it out a bit more nicely. Survivor Island seems pretty promising if I can manage to find tropical-themed tiles, shouldn't be too difficult though if I mix and match.

Right, especially near the end of making something it gets tempting to just say "fuck it" and rush the end, but I rarely ever do that. In the few times I do, I usually go back and fix it as best I can! I know hard work is what really pays off in the end. Sometimes it's better to just focus on another project when you get strung out; For now I'm focusing on regular drawings and a new video, but if I get fed up with either of those, I'll move back to the RPG or whatever else!

I think VX ACE is pretty straightforward, like you can literally just save tiles and use simple switches to change between them. But either way, I'll figure it out when the time comes!

Nice. ^^ So exciting. You probably should find tropical tiles, with all those indie games and indie rpgs... one of them is bound to have used a tropical theme.

Yeah, my sister often says that's best. If you're too stressed or stuck on one project, do something else. Usually ideas pop up while busy with something else. Which has worked for me a few times. xD

Nice. So much more easier to use. :)

I prefer VX Ace for the flexibility (custom damage formulas, the built-in sprite/face generator and other stats n shit are v. nice) but it's e x p e n s i v e. Anyway, the dialogue is sassy and looks promising despite the (unintentional) spelling errors.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ These are things I like to do with my own stuff:

General:

-Variables improve the replayability of visiting places you already were (random weather/randomly occurring events, can be used for turn countdowns, used to give a randomness to a possible money-stealing skill, randomizing dialogue with NPC encounters, etc.). Skills with random effects could also be designed with creative use of a variable system and Common Events. Use them.

-Finding looping music in higher quality than MIDI would be a huge plus, but I know too many large music files (especially uncompressed .wav audio) can prevent the game from compiling.

For battle:

-Letting us tweak a character's main role through equipment would be nice (tanking gear, support gear, damage gear, etc.).

-Useful support spells would be great (but I haven't used VX in forever so I don't remember the extent of what they can do, such as dispelling/creating damage-reduction shields like you can with Ace).

-Giving enemies (and party members) elemental/ailment weaknesses and resistances would provide more challenge.

-Bosses that take an unconventional strategy to defeat (such as stunlocking to keep it from using telegraphed uber attacks or damage-over-time effects to punch through a high defense) would be interesting.

-Enemies that appear in groups can also have their own dynamic that forces the player to prioritize threats (support vs casters vs physical attackers, etc.).

I only just recently got Ace on a Steam sale, it was like 15 bucks, not too bad! This game is made on regular VX though and I'm not sure if there's a way to import it over or something- Not only that but get all the custom stuff moved over as well, since I use Belletxt's tile swapper, I'm not sure if it would survive the transfer. And thanks, yeah I gotta go in and fix some of those errors, I got a list marked down for next time I edit it.

I really like the revisiting idea, where the time of day or weather changes somewhere. I'll have to look into how to do that, maybe put it on random so each visit is different! The music, I actually did find a way to compress the MP3's I used into .ogg files, it's another thing on my to-do list.

Yeah I wanted to find ways to spice up the battles a bit more. I do have planned other party members who will offer more variety of skills, but the over-all idea is that they'll each only have about 4 ~ 6 skills each, skills that will compliment each other once they get into group battles. But I like the idea of differentiating enemies, to be honest I think making enemies/battles is probably my weakest point with games like this, so I appreciate the help!

It would not survive the transfer (Ace being able to use multiple tilesets is really nice though)

To randomize weather/daytime would be (admittedly rather tedious, but workable without downloading any scripts):

-Create a single variable.
-Set up a Common Event with "None" for the trigger.
-Control variable > Set operation > Random (0-however many effects) is at the top of the list.
-Conditional branches for when variable = 0, 1, 2, 3 etc. or any mathematical stuff you want (more likely to generate a variable that corresponds to rain instead of snow, etc.)
-Set weather/tint screen effect.
-When moving to an outdoor location, call the common event (you can make separate Common Events using the same principle for areas that rain/storm but don't snow, places that only snow, etc.).

There's also parallax mapping for lighting but that's a lot of extra work.
