For the Youtubers

Sat May 3, 2014, 6:27 AM

From 2009 to 2013 I went on hiatus from Youtube. There were a few reasons for this happening; One of the major factors being a hard-drive crash which wiped nearly all of my REMusical base content. It took a long time for me embrace the change and seeing it as a way to improve myself. I also had my college art projects and studies to focus on during that time.

However, there was another reason I needed a break that I wasn't very vocal about. Truth was, I felt the Youtube community surrounding my videos had become excessively negative over time. What started out as something simple and fun had slowly transformed into a mess of drama and cruelty. Stalkers, rumors, thieves and the like only seemed to become more vile and tenacious. That's not to say there was no support or positivity; But I felt so overwhelmed by the growing hatred, spiteful rumors and rude demands that it was often hard to see anything from the positive side of things.

Now onto what I'd really like to talk about: The here and now. Ever since I've made my full return to Youtube, I've been overwhelmed again. Not by hatred and negativity... But because of how amazing you all have been with me and my animations. I've have so many wonderful comments and messages; Reminiscing the older videos, sharing personal stories, endless support, sincere appreciation, maturity and patience. It's like a complete turn-around and I can't thank you guys enough for having so much positive influence!

Maybe it's just my new perception on things, maybe most of the negative individuals left Youtube, or even grew and matured as individuals. Whatever it is, all I know is that I've been having just as great a time on Youtube now as I did before any of the negativity and drama. You've all been absolutely awesome and totally disprove the "stupid YT commenter" stigma. On the contrary, people have been polite, mature and honest, even with controversial opinions and discussions. So again, thank you all so much for being such a positive, outgoing bunch. Making videos is fun on my own time, but it's you guys who make being on Youtube fun!

Apologies to those who are confused or don't follow Youtube;
This message is intended for anyone who misses Youtube/Google+ posts

"maybe most of the negative individuals left Youtube, or even grew and matured as individuals."

*Insert J.K Simmons Spiderman video*

Anyway, glad to hear you're having a better experience this time around. Normally I'd say just ignore Youtube comments, but that's kind of counterproductive when you want to improve your craft; gotta listen to those constructive comments. Problem with Youtube is (and always has been) that trying to listen to them is like trying to listen with a horse farting in your ear; really hard to filter out the dumb shit.

So yeah, keep on with the videos girl. And enjoy having that image in your head :D

Yeah that is true... Back in the day, it really seemed that most of the time comments only came in two varieties. "lol good and funny" or "you suck bitch" which neither really offer any kind of real criticism or whatnot. Or the only "criticism" I'd get was against me as a person, and the my actual artwork. Like oh. But again, that's all in the past for the most part! And thank you.

Leggy, you are a fantastic YouTuber and animator. Let no one else tell you different, keep doing what you're doing, and always remember to keep making those videos as much fun as we have watching your hard work completed. Again, you are a fantastic YouTuber, and I think I can speak for all of us when I say we're glad to have ya back, old friend. :)

Thank you so much! I always make sure to work on videos when I'm feeling good and in the mood, knowing I'll enjoy it. That way they turn out the best they can be and can probably be enjoyed a lot better. I really appreciate it c:

That's the best thing for an amazing YouTuber like yourself to do...cause if you don't love doing it, no one's gonna love seeing it, but if you're in the mood and enjoying yourself creating the videos, odds are the audience is gonna enjoy themselves watching what you did. :) You're welcome.

Thank you! And yeah I've found that to be true in the past. I had a few videos and collaborations where I just wasn't into it and rushed to get it done, and it shows. They usually end up being the lesser liked videos also so now I know, go all-in or take a break!

You're welcome! And yeah, I could kinda see that..I think the same thing applies if you're a writer too. If you have an idea that doesn't fully flesh out but you write it anyway, it's not the best. But if it's staring you in the face, you'll have more time writing it and others will have a fun time reading what you wrote. I know, cause it happens to me...I'm guessing it happens to you too, cause you usually need scripts for your videos, right? Or do you just think of an idea and keep building off of it as you animate?

Yeah that sounds about right. You just have really be "feeling it" to get it done well. As for me, my older videos used to just go on a whim, idea to idea. Nowadays though I do storyboards, which are more or less visual scripts.

Oh, nice...for me, it's just a crazy idea I think of from something that inspires me - as far as videos go - and I have to do something about it as soon as I can, or else it's gone. It's pretty much the same thing as it was when I started to, except a bit more...well, civil, I suppose. The last thing I did was a skit parodying the effect of Will Sasso's videos on Vine - as in, the lemons.

Really! I know what it's like to feel like you have an overwhelming amout of negative... "followers" and it sucks especially when it seems like they are dwarfing the amount of positive responses you get- it's tough to focus on the positive mainly because the negative is always so much louder in your mind. Its almost like the negative washes away any compliments you've gotten- But I'm really glad that's not the case anymore C: cuz you rock and all that- just sayin'.

That's all very true, yeah. It would have been one thing if all the negativity just focused on criticizing my art or animations, but most of it was just being personally attacked and it got really tough. I hope you don't have to deal with people like that anymore either! And thank you : )

A new outlook can work wonders :) I think it's mostly you and your changed attitude toward the negativity. Or maybe Google Plus comments DID help with all the trolling... Nah what am I saying I can't credit Google Plus for anything but a pain in the ass :P

Maybe a break was needed all around. There were people that needed to see that there was more to life than YouTube (I don't mean you I mean the bullshitters XD) And maybe now that's more understood since the little community wasn't active all the time and they had to find something else to do! XD

It may have seemed like a lot of negativity with YouTube at the time, but I think you also had a lot of good experiences with YouTube even when you felt overwhelmed. It's something everybody with a following has to go through, unfortunately. Sometimes people get pushy and wanna see new stuff all the time. I guess the only way I can phrase it is they don't understand how people's situations are all different. And to the average person, you needing to take some time for you to see the set back with your hard drive as an opportunity to improve is understandable. You were pretty bummed.

It's just sometimes really easy to focus on negative people and let them bother you. They were a pretty vocal minority. Now I think you know that and let most of the bullshit roll off your back. You live and learn, I think we are all guilty of letting negatives get us down sometimes. What's important is you're back, and enjoying it, and loving your own work :) That's a really good thing! You overcame letting negativity get you down. While people may still complain every now and then, no body can argue or take away from you that you love to draw, and you take a lot of enjoyment out of networking with likeminded people online who enjoy your work too. Most of all, I think it's good to just focus on what people can't argue with, and that's the truth of your situation. No matter what they say, you know the truth and so does everyone who believes in you :)

I'm really glad to hear that you're back to enjoying yourself like you were before, maybe now even more. There were times back then I worried about negative people ruining your experience on YouTube. I just wanted it to be fun. There were times I wish I could speak up so you didn't have to take the heat, but I also knew you were a big girl and could handle yourself ;) Since then I've learned a lot myself, including that things have a way of working out. I guess even YouTube did :) It does mean a lot to me to hear that you are back to enjoying yourself. That really does feel good to know.

I'm very proud of you for a change in how you look at things. That's not easy, but if anyone could've done it it'd be you. You're one of the most positive and "can do" spirits I've ever met when it comes to your art. :) Let the hatahs hate, they're the ones who are gonna look dumb being the only one with something bad to say instead of moving along if it's not their cup of tea.

Yeah I do think a large portion of it also has to do with my own perception. Like, I was getting some nice positive comments at the time too, stiff that went beyond just "lol funny" but actual in-depth comments once in a while. At that time though, along with feeling overwhelmed by the asshattery was all that jaded doubt. You probably know what I mean, when people you think are friendly turn on you, or how everyone seemed to have a motive... So it was hard to even believe the nicer comments with all that was happening.

But yeah now it's like fuck all that, for real. Not only has the negativity gone down, but it just feels like people are more genuine too. Again that might just be my different perception now, but it doesn't hurt that all the people who backstabbed me for lack of a better word, are more or less gone now. It's definitely a lot more fun now and I've become more keen at the off chance someone does try to pull one over. And of course drawing has been a shitload more fun even and I'm happy where that is too XD

Yo I try bein' as can-do as I can. So thanks lady! You've helped me a lot through all them shenanigans and antics too, I can't deny I had a blast back in the day too mainly cause of you and our other friends too. And when shit got bad, you was always there to help me even. Yo hatahs gonna hate XD

Maybe people just realized that you are a great artist, with a genuine sense of humor that enhances the genre.

I am so happy that I have been an unwitting fan since you began on youtube. I thought you had already been on for years when I found your channel in '09 based solely on the huge subscriber count. I have been laughing at your hijinks ever since. I said in a earlier post that you have grown greatly as a animator over the years, but your faith in the subject matter has always been your true calling. You "GET" Resident Evil, and even Silent Hill, for that matter. Your twisted (in a good way!) sense of humor has forever changed the way I play R.E. For the better.

I never knew why you took the hiatus until now, I just figured it was "Life" interfering, but I am very glad you did return. Thank you for keeping us entertained Leggy!

Yeah I had been on YT since 2006, and I guess you could say it started to get popular around 2007. That first year was really laid back, simple and fun. After that though, each year following slowly started to just add more and more, both positive and negative. It seems a few others also found out about my channel in 2009, though unfortunately that was the same year everything kinda culminated and I couldn't handle much of it anymore. Well, on YT anyways! I was happy to be active on dA though.

I really do appreciate your words! I'm glad fellow fans are able to enjoy my content and see all of the little jokes and references. And to know that no matter how simple or outdated my artwork is, the humor shines though to look that over and still be charming. Thank you!

Well, my life at the time did get fairly busy along with my harddrive killing itself. But in terms of Youtube, I just needed to get away for a while. dA was mah homeboy!

Youtube always has its ups and downs. I've always been a fan of your work since the first RE Numa (probably on a different and surely deactivated account because I was a young brainless kid at the time), and I've been there when you uploaded the first version of RE Excited, and so forth. It's great to see your work grow bigger and bigger. I can see how the pressures of getting views, good or bad, affect your lifestyle in ways you'd never imagine; they can either make you wiser or greedy, but in your case much wiser than most.

I'm always a good fan of yours and hopefully a good friend, Leggy. I'l be around to the end, and beyond. ^u^

I think so too, it'll always have it's ups and downs even now but I'm gonna be more about embracing the good instead! I really appreciate that you've stuck with me since the beginning, it's really not something I'd of even comprehended back in the day. That being said, I guess that's what ended up catching up to me; I never expected anything like that to happen, both good and bad and I just couldn't handle it anymore. Not on YT anyway. I may have goofed up in the past my fair share of times, but if I say so myself I think I learned a lot from it too. I really appreciate it : )

Thank you so much!
